Nowadays, adult development is an interesting part of the psychoanalytic field. In past there was a belief that development was completed during infancy, childhood and adolescence, but new ideas that development in adulthood was ongoing were suggested. The subject of this paper is development of the middle adulthood(40 to 60) between the early(20 to 40) and the late(ages 60 and beyond) adulthood. The author reviewed overviews of the development and the middle adulthood, concepts of adult development, Erikson¡¯s theory of psychosocial development, the separation-individuation theory, and Colarusso¡¯s the Third, Forth and Fifth individuation theory. The author suggest that an improved understanding about adult development will aid our understanding and treatment of the aged patient, not only in psychoanalytic situations but also in psychotherapeutic situations.
